6th Grade Information for Parents
Ms. Pass (Science & Connections)
Mrs. Elwyn (Language Arts & Connections)
Ms. Cunningham (S.Studies/ Reading/Math)
Parents, we look forward to a fun and productive year in sixth grade.
Together, we can help your child build a strong foundation for the middle
school years. Information about our team routines will enable you to support
your child in development of study habits, which enhance school success.
Welcome to Twality!
Supplies:
Please check with your child periodically to see if any supply items need to be replenished or replaced. Having the appropriate materials to work with will allow students to participate in all 6th grade assignments, projects, and activities.
Snack Policy:
Fruits or vegetables (as produced by a real tree or plant) may be eaten at the beginning of 2nd period.
Quality Checklist for Assignments:
· Neatness and accuracy, with attention to spelling, capitalization, and paragraphs
· “Clean” paper – no rips or tears; drawings only as part of assignment
Organization:
Please encourage use of the student planner and check it regularly at home
Help students establish a system for knowing what work has been:
* assigned (write it down)
* completed (check it off)
* turned in (single line through it)
Refer to teacher websites for assignment calendars; use files and links for more detail
Regularly check your child’s binder to help reinforce appropriate organization of materials
Make-up Work:
· Students have one day for each consecutive day of absence to make up assignments
· Please check teacher websites/assignment calendars for assignment information.
· For extended absences, parents may call the Guidance Office to request their child’s for pick-up after school. Please call in advance so teachers have an opportunity to put the assignments together. Thank you.
* In 6th grade, make-up work is primarily the responsibility of the student. With support from teachers and parents, students are expected to know and complete missing work.
· For planned absences, we request that parents contact the teacher a week in advance.
· Please note: assignments for planned absences are due on the day the student returns to school if they are requested before a student's departure
Grading Scale:
A 90-100% (Exceeeds) B 80-89% (proficient) C 70-79% (Progressing)
D 41-69% (Emerging) F 0-40% (Not meeting)
Improving Scores on Graded Work:
In some situations, students may have the opportunity to make corrections on graded assignments for an improved score. Students are asked to make corrections on notebook paper, staple that paper on top of the original paper and return to the teacher by the date requested (usually the next school day).
Grade Reports:
· Twality observes a quarter system. Report cards are mailed home.
· Students are responsible for writing missing assignments in their planners.
· Students and parents may check updated grades on Synergy from any computer (please remember that grades are updated as regularly as a teacher is able to collect, score, and enter student scores in eSIS, so usually scores will not show up on the same day that an assignment is due.)
Conferences:
Parent-teacher conferences are held in mid-October and in March prior to Spring Break. Conferences are held with team teachers jointly. Each conference is scheduled for 10 minutes and students are invited to attend along with their parents. Translators are available.
In Closing:
Successful middle school students have parents who are involved with their children and supportive of school activities. In 6th grade, students are expected to take responsibility for their assignments, but parent support and encouragement are still very important to their success
Effective communication among teacher, parent and student maximizes the opportunity for success. Please do not hesitate to contact us with questions or concerns. During the school day, feel free to leave a phone or email message for us and we will get back to you at the earliest opportunity.
